Scientists believe that when we are asleep it is when our brain sorts through the events of our lives and files them away, like a librarian and a filing cabinet. They also believe this is why we dream.

A mnemonic device is any rhyme, joke, song, or phrase that triggers memory of another fact, such as the abbreviation Roy G Biv, which tells you the colors of the spectrum. The best mnemonic devices are those which use humor or positive imagery, as you will have an easier time remembering them.

Teaching information to others can help you remember it better. You might find it helpful to discuss an idea with others; this makes it more likely that you will be able to recall the memory at a later date. This also allows you to properly encode the memory into your brain, making it much easier to call upon when needed.

Do not doubt yourself. A lot of people believe that memory wanes as you get older. This isn't always true. Expecting that your memory will start to go can actually damage your memory. If people are telling you that you are absentminded and forgetful, you may start to internalize these labels. You can help your memory just by believing that it is still healthy and strong.
